DC Charter School Alliance’s Executive Director Reacts to the US Supreme Court's Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board Decision

WASHINGTON, DC – Following the Supreme Court’s 4-4 Decision Against the Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board, Ariel Johnson, Executive Director of the DC Charter School Alliance, released the following statement:

“The DC Alliance is pleased to report that in a 4-4 split decision, the U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed the widely-held understanding that charter schools are public schools. This decision leaves the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s ruling in place, barring religious charter schools from operation.

“This decision is a big win for public education and will allow the 48,000 students across DC to continue their public charter school education uninterrupted. Public charter schools are critical to ensuring high-quality education for all students in the District.

“But let me be clear – these attacks will continue. A 4-4 decision does not preclude the Supreme Court from hearing this case again in the future. We must continue to fight back and continue the hard work of strengthening public schools so that every student, regardless of religious affiliation, zip code, or economic background, has the ability to thrive.

“Thank you to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools for their leadership on this important issue affecting the public charter school community.”
