DC Charter School Alliance Statement Marking Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

May 15, 2023

By Ariel Johnson, Executive Director

This month is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, an opportunity to celebrate the social and cultural contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders in our country. Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

This month, DC Charter School Alliance is reflecting on and paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders in our city and in our schools who have enriched our history and are instrumental to our success today and everyday. We’re proud to recognize and acknowledge our city’s diverse Asian and Pacific Islander communities and how each has shaped, and continues to shape, the District. This month is also a time to give space to our AAPI students to be heard, be seen, and to celebrate all the ways each student strengthens our public charter school communities.

We also recognize the pervasive discrimination and stereotyping that have harmed Asian and Pacific Islander communities for centuries and has been on the rise in recent years. We’re grateful to organizations like Stop AAPI Hate who are working to advance equity, justice, and power by dismantling systemic racism and building a multicultural movement to end Asian American and Pacific Islander hate.

If you are looking to celebrate or educate yourself on the history or present of the Asian American and Pacific American communities, please attend one of the many learning and cultural events the District offers. And don’t forget to patronize a local Asian-owned or Pacific Islander-owned business!

Here’s a list of all the ways to celebrate or learn more around D.C. this month!
